Jay Therrell was appointed North East District Superintendent on July 1, 2016. Prior to joining the Florida Conference Cabinet, he was the senior pastor of Cape Coral First United Methodist Church for eight years. He has also served as the associate pastor at both First United Methodist Churches of Ormond Beach and Kissimmee. At Ormond Beach, Dr. Therrell was appointed to help start a second campus for the church. During his time at Kissimmee, he led the church’s homeless ministry including its Sunday evening service and feeding ministry.
Before becoming a pastor, Dr. Therrell practiced estate planning and tax law for a large law firm in the Orlando area. He is still a member of the Florida Bar. He has also served as a congressional aide in the 105th Congress. Doctor Therrell’s undergraduate degrees are in political science and accounting from Presbyterian College. His law degree is from the University of Florida. He received his master of divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary. Doctor Therrell is also a Hansard Scholar having studied British politics and public policy at the London School of Economics while serving as an aide to a member of the British House of Commons.
Doctor Therrell was appointed a guest chaplain to the U.S. House of Representatives by former Congressman Connie Mack. He has served on the Florida Conference Board of Ordained Ministry for four years. He served on the South West District Committee on Ordained Ministry for seven years and chaired it for four of those years. He has also served on the Conference Committee on Standing Rules for eight years, chairing it for seven. Further, Dr. Therrell served on the South West District Operations Team at its inception helping to devise a ministry action plan for the district and addressing adaptive issues. During his time in Cape Coral, Dr. Therrell helped to found and served on the Board of Directors for the Samaritan Health and Wellness Center, a Christian primary care and behavioral health clinic for the uninsured and underinsured. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Presbyterian College Alumni Association and was student body president on the Florida-Dunnam Campus of Asbury Seminary.
Doctor Therrell is married to Kendra who is a partner in a statewide law firm with offices in Jacksonville. Together they have one son. In his spare time, Dr. Therrell likes to travel, cook, and be an avid fan of all things Disney, Star Wars, and the University of Florida.
